The Story

The school opened in 1935 as Woodrow Wilson High School, serving the rapidly growing neighborhoods of Upper Northwest DC. In 2022, the school was renamed Jackson-Reed High School to honor Edna Burke Jackson, a longtime DC educator and civil rights advocate who taught at the school, and Vincent Reed, who was the first Black principal in DC to lead a predominantly white high school and later served as DC schools superintendent. The campus features distinctive Art Deco architecture and extensive athletic facilities. Jackson-Reed is known for its diverse student body, strong academics, and championship athletics programs.
