The Story

Washington Hebrew Congregation is the oldest Jewish congregation in the nation's capital, founded just four years after the city itself was established as the seat of government. The congregation moved to its current Macomb Street location in 1955. Presidents and dignitaries have attended services here, and the synagogue has played a central role in Washington's Jewish life for over 170 years.
