The Story
The American Fazl Mosque holds the distinction of being the first mosque purpose-built for Islamic worship in the United States. Constructed by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, the mosque was built on land purchased in 1950, with the building completed in 1957. Its name 'Fazl' means 'grace' in Arabic. The mosque features traditional Islamic architecture with a dome and minaret, and has been a center for interfaith dialogue and community service in Washington.
